Description
Up for sale, a 1920's soprano ukulele crafted of solid mahogany in excellent condition. The brand of this uke is unknown, but the construction and appointments are consistent with soprano ukes of the era, featuring original friction pegs and rope binding on the top, soundhole rosette, and backstrip. This ukulele is crack-free, with a clear sound yielding both warmth and a bubbly treble snap, offering plenty of sweet projection
. The action is comfortable and easily playable all the way up the fretboard, and the uke has been strung with black nylon strings.
The mahogany neck has a slender profile with
slight shoulders at the nut and a bit more roundness in the carve by the 5th fret and beyond, measuring
.705" deep at the 1st fret and .835" at the 7th
. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the original slender bar frets, and the original nut appears to be dyed maple and has been reglued in the past. The headstock retains the stock friction pegs which still function quite well.
The diminutive mahogany body is framed by rope binding, and the original bridge (which has been reseated in the instrument's lifetime) has its original bar fret saddle. Wear is limited to various scuffs and minor marks across the body, and this uke is ready for another century of use.
The ostensibly original shipping crate is included, along with a Kalamonos chordbook.
