Description
From my collection:Here we have an Antique J. T. TOOGOOD, UCKFIELD, England, Brass Cased Holometallic Barometer on a Carved Mahogany Stand.
My reference book
"Barometer Makers and Retailers 1660-1900, by Edwin Banfield
listed James Thomas Toogood was a clock and watchmaker in Uckfield, England, circa 1878. Early watchmakers routinely manufactured barometers. This instrument is in Very Good used working condition. I verified this using the 'plastic bag test'. The base case has a very nice aged patina. I see two very, very shallow dents along the bezel edge: at the 29.75 and at the 31.5 calibration marks. No cracks in the glass. This barometer has originally intended to be a wall mount instrument using the top brass
crown and bow ring. however a very early owner hand-carved
a beautiful Mahogany stand
so it could be better displayed. No cracks, breaks or repairs in the stand. The brass case is 4-1/2" in diameter x 1-7/8" Deep. The stand is 6-3/4" L x 4-3/8" H x 2-1/4" D. When the barometer is in the stand it is 7-3/4" tall.
